Golden Rock pagoda & Bago
On Day 1 you will depart from Yangon to Kyaikhtiyo (about 4 h drive).
Kyaikhtiyo pagoda, widely-known as the Golden Rock pagoda, is one of the most veneered Buddhist pilgrimage sites. 7 m high, the pagoda is built on the top of a granite boulder and covered with tiny gold leaves pasted by thousands of pilgrims over the years. The boulder seems to defy the gravity. According to the local beliefs, the tiny thread can be put between the boulder and the rock proving that no material was used to keep the boulder on it. Legend also says that a precious relic – a Buddha’s hair – is enshrined in the pagoda keeping it from falling. Journey to Myanmar could not be complete without visiting the Golden Rock!
On Day 2 you will come back to Yangon and will visit Bago.
Provincial town of Bago, located just 1.5 h drive from Yangon, concentrates more Buddhist temples than any other settlement of a similar size in Myanmar. Bago is one of the oldest towns in the country – the history of this ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom counts more than 1500 years.
You will visit Kanbawzathadi Royal palace, originally built in the 16th century, times of the prosperity of the Myanmar empire, and reconstructed in the 1990s, and Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha image, one of the world’s largest. The Buddha image is believed to be more than one thousand years old and was miraculously re-discovered in the middle of the 20th century after a long time of oblivion and decline. The Golden God Temple – Shwemawdaw pagoda, the tallest temple in Myanmar – is also on your “must-see” list in Bago as well as Kyaikpun pagoda, famous for its four gigantic Sitting Buddha images placed against the sides of a massive brick pillar. These are the highly revered images of Buddha Shakyamuni and his three predecessors.
You will also visit Tauk Kyaung War Cemetery which was established in commemoration of soldiers and officers of the Commonwealth dead in battles in Burma during WWI and WWII. This is the largest of the three Commonwealth War Cemeteries in Myanmar.
